In Legendary, a semi-cooperative deck-building game, 1 to 5 players take the roles of heroes from fan-favorite universes (Marvel, Big Trouble in Little China, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and attempt to stop a mastermind and their nefarious schemes. The Judge is the only villain that doesn't start the game in play, but all three of his minions (Spike, Drusilla and Vamp X) move every turn, until they find the Arm of the Judge and take it back to his start square, where he is reformed. A built in timer (in this case, the Apocalypse Track) ratchets up the tension and, when the timer runs out, the game ends because everyone is dead.

Every time you think you’re making headway, you’ll face some new peril that threatens to undermine your heroic efforts. A player in the correct hex must spend a turn investigating each clue to learn how to defeat the Big-Bad. Of course, at times it is very obvious what needs to be done, but there are times when the fast-paced game slows because the players are looking at the board and trying to puzzle out the way forwards with all the options available.

Once you defeat the big bad, Sunnydale is safe – or at least as safe as a cursed city built on a Hellmouth can possibly be.

If the Apocalypse Tract fills up with dead townies and accumulated wounds to Buffy and her gang it is game over. There is not a lot of connection with the items, but that seems okay as they are used then gone then got back again and this cycling of items instead of hoarding adds a lot of movement and decision making to the game especially as the hand limit is three, (or four with fewer players).The plot twists can sometimes feel a bit arbitrary, and occasionally a badly shuffled deck can ruin the game if too many come up at once. Each one has advantages and disadvantages: Buffy is the strongest one, except for Werewolf Oz, but she can't cast spells with much success. Fans of Buffy will find a lot to enjoy about this set, but for us it’s one of the weaker line ups so far.
