About this deal

Lockdown Looms: Reggie's Birthday Party is the first in the series written by author (and primary school teacher), Banji Alexander. This is a beautiful story written with accessible vocabulary which brings the story of the pandemic to life and is accompanied with fabulous bright and vibrant illustrations.

There was also those who were going to celebrate birthday’s anniversaries and milestones whilst we were to be locked away from the world.

Children especially have struggled and have been affected educationally, emotionally and with life development in general. My son loved the way he could relate to Reggie’s experiences and was engrossed in the book from start to finish.

I am currently editing my first YA novel which I hope to be able to share with you all in the future. With the book tour he is on, he gets to share the positive messages from his book with over 2,000 people every week. This story is perfect for all the family as it is covering themes of, hope, families, pandemics and mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has given children a window into a world they had never seen before or been exposed to. He says everyone can do amazing things, but it is just that people don’t lean into that side as much as they should.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Even when he wasn’t in school, he spent much of his free time reading rather than getting in trouble. When I tweeted about the letter at the time, I extended thanks and gratitude to all the teachers across the country because this was just one thing that I had done personally. One minute I was teaching, the next minute, I was on the biggest news stations here: BBC News, ITV News, Sky News, Guardian Newspaper.

I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the Lockdown Looms series and I think every primary library/classroom needs a copy of this book to support young children with the after-effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Banji Alexander, a year three teacher in London, saw his students' challenges and decided to help them cope with those intense emotions in a fictional way with his book, “Lockdown Looms: Reggie’s Birthday Party.

Alexander says, “I think more personally to me for what I've taken away from writing the book is that anything is possible because writing this book has changed my life completely.

With the expectation that life in lockdown will be a thing of the past by the time we reached November, however, this was not the case. Some of the main themes within the story are kindness, resilience, adapting to change, and patience. He says there is no greater feeling than helping someone realize they can do something they didn’t think possible, and that is what his experience has been with Banji’s Class. Alexander received praise for his book and the positive impact it had on school children in the United Kingdom.Children were one of the more heavily impacted groups when looking at the effects of the pandemic on day-to-day life. Banji Alexander is an exciting new author, bursting onto the scene with his debut book, ‘ Lockdown Looms: Reggie’s Birthday Party‘. The lockdown was one of those uncertain times for us all, with both adults and children having to attempt to make sense of the changing world around them. Thrown into this mix was all the parts of our lives that we desperately didn’t want to lose within the pandemic, such as celebrating birthdays.
